Reading Schemes

At St. Mildred’s we teach children to read during Daily Guided Reading Sessions.

We encourage children to apply their reading skills to a variety of different genres so we ‘Colour Band Books’ so the children access the appropriate level.

The children take home books in their ‘book bags’ to read with their grown-ups.

The Reading Schemes that we use are;

Oxford Reading Tree

Oxford Phonics

Traditional Tales

Floppy Phonics

Project X

Big Cat Phonics

Some children have Reading Intervention with our trained Support Staff through Better Reading Partnerships (BRP.) We also have Beanstalk intervention groups a volunteer led reading programme.

At St. Mildred’s Infant School we teach the Department of Education’s Phonics Scheme

‘Letters and Sounds.’

The children have daily phonic sessions which are taught in the following sequence;

Revisit and Revise

Letters and Sounds is a fun and fast paced way to teach children how to read, spell and write!

We run Parent Workshops at the beginning of each academic year to enable them to support their child at home.

Some children may need additional support with Phonics, so we also use Jolly Phonics and Rapid Phonics as an Intervention Programme.
